Conventional medicine would have us think only of our bodies as physical meat and bones and various types of plumbing and filtering all of which can be fixed and kept going through the intervention of pharmaceuticals and the physical intervention of other means to help repair and fix.  In other words, most conventional western medicine disregards the influence of the mind on healing.  It is the only healing modality to do so.  All other healing modes be they shamanic and tribal right through to the sophistication of Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, all acknowledge in some way that the mind plays a huge part in healing.

Visualisation for health

First of all the word visualisation is often used in the west when considering how the mind can be used and trained.  There are numerous studies which have analysed the impact of visualisation upon healing and regaining health after illness, as well as such seemingly esoteric practices as prayer and meditation.  Leaving those ton one side for the moment, let us think about the word ‘visualisation’.  It demands that we create an imaginary movie or still image and work with our minds through that medium, but what if you can’t visualise?  Not everybody can, and not everybody finds it easy.

Remember you have five senses, sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing as well as your own internal feelings and emotions and internal speech.  When thinking about creating a healing goal it is important to use all available senses as much as possible to create as interesting and compelling and real scenario as possible for yourself.  And it is a healing goal that you are creating.

The important questions for a healing goal

How do you want to be?  An absolutely vital question for a health and healing goal, after all you know all about how you don’t want to be don’t you?  In glorious detail you will know exactly all the ins and outs of exactly what you don’t want more of in your life.  This is where the discipline starts, how do you want to be?  What do you want to be able to see, hear, touch, taste, smell, feel and hear in your own mind as a fit and healthy person?  What do you want to be able to do more or more easily than now?  What’s that like?  What is your life like when you are whole and healed?  What do you do?  Where do you go?  Who are you with and how do they react to you now?

It is by answering these questions and similar that will help train your mind into thinking in another way and begin the process of moving towards what you want more of in your life.

You see, your unconscious mind is a very helpful kind of tool, it wants what is best for you, but it needs guidance (your goal) and it wants to bring more of what you spend most time thinking about into your life.  So if you are focused on illness, it will act as if this is what you want more of.  Does this prevent you from becoming well, whole and healed again?  No, of course not but it may slow down the process of healing, so why not help things along by consciously directing your thoughts and building your health goals towards what you do want instead of what you don’t?
